Norwich is both flat and rad, and has therefore been much beloved and used by skateboarders for many years to develop their skills and enjoy being outside with other boarders. Te skaters of Norwich were horrified by the news of a knarly proposed skateboard ban in the city centre last month. A few council members had objected to people using the paved area outside City Hall to skate, saying that it was destroying the War Memorial. We hoped for an immediate 360 flip on that decision.
In
the past few weeks lots has happened. A councillor’s email was accidently shared with the general public, calling a
letter from skating campaign group Long Live Southbank “utter tosh”. Over 6,600 people signed a petition calling on the council to scrap the ban, presented by Sam from Drugstore. Norwich City Council ran a six week consultation which asked local residents whether they supported an extension to the ban. Te results were 6% in favour, 92% against and 2% said they didn’t know.
Hundreds of Norwich people gathered en masse at a demo ahead of the council meeting to show their enthusiastic support to the lively youth street culture of this fine city. At the meeting, the ban was overturned. Hurrah!
But it’s not over yet; there’s still gonna be a 12 week consultation on whether to use a Public Space Protection Order to stop people committing “anti-social behaviour” on the war memorial and Memorial Gardens. Skateboarders and others could be hit with a fine of up to £100; police, police community support officers and council officers would be able to issue the notices. Norwich!
