Gig of the year Last Great Dreamers @ Purple Turtle, Camden. Album of the yearTe Dowling Poole - Bleak Strategies

Te two best albums of 2014 are Mogwai’s Rave Tapes and Last Great Dreamers’ Crash Landing In Teenage Heaven, in my opinion. However, my album of the year is Bleak Strategies by Te Dowling Poole, the most unexpected and surprising album it has been my pleasure to hear this year. Te eponymous duo is Jon Poole of Te Cardiacs and Willie Dowling. Dowling is one of our great unsung song writers, having composed for TV, collaborated with Ginger Wildheart among others and fronted the unjustly long forgotten Cat People and Te Grip. Tis is full of psychedelic pop gems, mixing the twisted genius of Te Cardiacs with ELO, Te Beatles, Big Star, Redd Kross, Te Kinks and early Elton John (before he became a dick). A classic album by two of rock’s good chaps that deserves a wide audience.

Gig of the year Lady Gaga ArtRave: Te Artpop Ball Album of the year Lesbian Bed Death -Te Devil's Bounty Hunters

Lesbian Bed Death don't do pretentious, unlike many goth bands out there. Some of their songs have a punk feel to them, some more goth, whereas others, in the band's own words, “sound like Tina Turner jamming with Pantera”. Fabulous. As a result the group's fourth studio album, 'Te Devil's Bounty Hunters', is an accessible piece of gothic rock - big guitars with spooky lyrics to be sung (rather than wailed) along to. Lesbian Bed Death is a band with a lot of talent and a sense of humour, which makes a great combination whatever genre a band plays in. Top five tracks of the year-

Gig of the year Sikth @ Te Waterfront Album of the year- Having spent most of this year writing about movies, I thought that I would select my

favourite movie soundtrack of 2014, and the accolade goes to Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol.1.

Firstly, this is not just another movie “soundtrack” that uses a brief snippet of the latest trending tune as incidental background noise, simply so some industry fat cat can say it featured and sell units. No, this eclectic ‘70s mix propels the action becoming, in itself, a major plot device. Secondly, it truly is an awesome mix, which evokes memories of the Walkman-era mix tape, when shuffling was what you did with a pack of cards, not mp3s, and playlists were auditory journeys crafted with care and attention, ebb and flow. Want to know how to get from Bowie to 10CC? Listen to this, and call me Star Lord!

Gig of the year Haim @ UEA LCR Album of the year Bombay Bicycle Club - So Long See You Tomorrow

Produced by frontman Steadman after some extensive globetrotting, So Long See You Tomorrow is my firm 2014 favourite. It’s dangerously Eat Pray Love to say that Bombay ‘found themselves’ after Steadman’s adventures, but their new found worldliness has certainly helped to cement Album No 4. as their most sonically innovate yet. SLSYT sees Bombay escape the safety of guitars and venture into the bottomless realm of Bollywood sampling, swirling synths and off-kilter basslines. Every track is captivating, whether it’s the stripped back balladry of Eyes off You or the impossible to dance to Carry Me, with its shifting rhythm and distorted drum beat. Long-time collaborator Lucy Rose lends her seductive voice to several tracks, whilst Rae Morris’ lustrous tones synchronise beautifully with Steadman’s in the serene Luna. A euphoric, enthralling record, SLSYT is my 2014 jam.
