THE DEPARTMENT OF BIOLOGY AND CHEMISTRY presented the 17th annual Britton C. ’27 and Lucile McCabe Lecture featuring Jimmie Oxley on April 2, on the campus. Oxley’s presentation entitled, “The Explosive Threat,” examined improvised homemade explosives and how research contributes to preventing the production of these devices. Oxley is a chemistry professor and co-


director of the Center of Excellence in Explosive Detection, Mitigation, and Response at the University of Rhode Island. Her expertise is in the chemistry of thermal decomposition of explosives and highly energetic materials. Oxley created a database that is used by

scientists, law enforcement, and military personnel from around the world to assist them in combating explosives-based terrorism. She worked closely with bomb squads following the 2005 London bombings, collaborated with


the FBI on simulations of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, and worked with British officials to examine larger fertilizer bombs. Oxley also has worked with the United Kingdom and Israel on research projects related to explosives and terrorism.

Physician Assistant Program Produces Perfect Pass Rate


ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of 2013 graduates of the physician assistant (PA) program passed the Physician Assistant National Certifying Exam (PANCE) in their first attempt to become certi- fied by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants. This marks the sixth-consecutive year that physician assistant graduates have earned a 100 percent pass rate on the national certifying exam for first-time takers.


Matthews Named HPER Dean


TRACEY MATTHEWS, DPE, has been appointed dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation. Matthews earned a doctor of physical educational degree from Springfield College in 2002, and a Master of Science degree in physical education from the College in 1997. In 2011, Matthews co-authored a textbook entitled, Designing and Conducting Research in Health and Human Performance. “I am absolutely thrilled


about being selected to serve as the next dean of the School of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation at Springfield College,” said Matthews. “I look forward to the opportunity to help guide


the School forward and build on its enduring success made possible by our passionate students and alumni, our dedicated faculty, and the leadership of the College’s administration. It is an honor and privilege to serve as the next dean, and I look forward to opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.” Prior to her time as a Springfield College faculty member,


Matthews was a faculty member for the Castleton State College Physical Education Department from 1997 through 2002, including three years as department chair.
