U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Daniel Warren was awarded the Bronze Star with Valor for his heroism during an insurgent attack on Bastion Airfield in Afghanistan on Sept. 14, 2012, at a ceremony in Cocoa Beach, Fla., in March. The battle, a five- hour firefight in which two marines were killed, nine were wounded, and $200 million of aircraft and equipment was destroyed, was the largest attack on an American airfield since the Tet Offensive in Vietnam on January 30, 1968. Warren and others helped rescue wounded soldiers in the midst of crossfire, and gunned down grenade-wielding insur- gents. While at Springfield College, Warren swam for the Pride from 2004 to 2006 under direction of head coach John Taffe. Warren is a pararescue- man with the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force Base (AFB) in Florida, and was featured in Vol. 83, No. 2 issue of Triangle magazine.

2006 Anna Grearson

Anna Grearson loves the Boston Red Sox. She loves the Sox so much that she was featured in a documentary, Green Mountain Dreamers, about die-hard fans that live in Vermont. The piece, which aired on NESN on May 18, 2014, highlighted Grearson’s story, as well as a few centenari- ans who have followed the team’s ups and downs during their lifetime, and a 14-year-old who was a Red Sox Kid Nation captain a few years ago, and now is a young radio and print journalist. The documentary also visits a young man with cerebral palsy, who didn’t let his illness stop him from throwing out the first pitch at a Red Sox game.

Grearson’s segment focuses on why she chose to start her career in Vermont (she is the sports editor for the Barre- Montpelier Times Argus and was named Vermont Sportswriter of the Year in 2012 and 2013), what the Sox mean to her and other Vermonters, and her family’s love of the game, some- thing that is very close to Grearson’s heart.

“My parents have both passed away, and my dad was a huge

fan—needless to say there are a few tears on my part. But really, how many Red Sox fans have never cried over something to do with [the team]?” said Grearson.

Grearson was chosen to be part of the documentary because of her strong connec- tion to sports in Vermont. She has been part of the annual Baseball Show on Vermont Public Radio numerous times and recently won the Excellence in Sports Medicine Reporting Award from the National Athletic Trainers Association for her coverage on new concussion laws in Vermont.

“I’m nervous to be on the other end of a story. Normally I get to hide behind the screen and my pen! But I know Mount Mansfield Media and NESN have put together a beautiful piece celebrating Vermonters’ love of baseball and the Boston Red Sox. I’m humbled and honored to represent my state, my news- paper, my family, and Springfield College,” said Grearson.

Margaret (Low) Weis was ordained as a Unitarian Universalist minister in North Andover, Mass., in March.

2008 Kevin Richards received the Young Professional Award from the Indiana State Conference for his work teaching as well as publishing 14 articles in several different physical education journals. He recently was employed by Purdue University in its research department.
