CLASS NOTES AND NEWS

1987 Mike Sheehan had a chance to make a difference for his college friend, utilizing spirit, mind, and, most importantly in this instance, body. Classmate Brad Vernet was born with one kidney and diagnosed with kidney disease 23 years ago. Vernet, son-in-law of longtime faculty member and Director of the Premedical Scholars Club Mary Healey, had been looking for a donor through social media and word of mouth after his kidney function dropped and he entered stage five of the disease.

Numerous friends had started the donation process, one even making it all the way to the end only to be rejected because of high blood pressure. Vernet and his wife Katy began to explore—and began to think they had exhausted—numerous other options, when the couple received news that changed everything.

On March 9, Sheehan notified the Vernet family to let them know he was a match and had passed the rigorous examination needed to confirm him as a suitable donor. The procedure took place on April 10 and was a success. At press time, Vernet and Sheehan are reportedly doing well.
