SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE hosted its baccalaureate and 128th commencement ceremonies in May. Under - graduate commencement was held Sunday, May 18, at the MassMutual Center in Springfield. Graduate Commencement and Baccalaureate were held on the campus on Saturday, May 17. A leader in the field of medicine, Dr. G. Richard Olds, delivered the commence- ment addresses at both commencement ceremonies. Richard is the son of the eighth president of Springfield College, Glenn A. Olds. At the undergraduate commencement, 944 bachelor’s

degrees were awarded. At the graduate commencement, 600 master’s degrees, five certificates of advanced graduate study, nine doctor of philosophy degrees, and 30 doctor of physical therapy degrees were awarded, for a two-day total of 1,588 degrees. Former Springfield College Associate Protestant Chaplain Gregory Dyson and members of the 1934

Dr. Richard Olds

American Legion Post 21 Baseball Team (see page 21) received the 2014 Humanics Achievement Award. “To the Class of 2014, I would point out that the future will often place many obstacles in your way,”

said Richard, who spent his childhood, from ages of 7 to 15, growing up on campus. “The road will not always be easy. You will need to find the inner strength to overcome those obstacles and be guided by your own moral compass. Fight for what you believe in with your whole body, mind, and spirit. Let the spirit of Springfield College guide your future as it did for my father.” Richard’s speeches were part of the 50th anniversary celebration of Martin Luther King Jr.’s

commencement speech at Springfield College in 1964. The College recognized this historic moment with a series of special events honoring Glenn A. Olds and King during the 2013-14 academic year. The senior Olds withstood controversy in inviting King to speak at the 1964 commencement.
