OFF ALDEN STREET

1987 Kyle McInnis (G), health sciences chair at Merrimack College and creator of Active Science, was awarded a $500,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, in partnership with the Merrimack Valley YMCA. McInnis will be working on a project called Active Science that combines education and reducing

childhood obesity. “Exerlearning,” as it is referred to, increases levels of physical activity and supports academic—science, technology, engineering, and math—areas through technology. Children wear activity trackers that send exercise data to mobile devices that show information through graphs and figures. Interactive

academic lessons are provided using the physical activity data that the children generate. Active Sciences has been operating through the Lawrence branch of the Merrimack Valley YMCA. In the future, the YMCA will create a National Active Sciences Center

as part of the Andover/North Andover facility expansion, which broke ground in March.

Center Leads New “Wellness Through Sports” Program

THE SPRINGFIELD COLLEGE Center for Wellness Education and Research, in collaboration with the Greater Springfield YMCA and the Dunbar Community Center, recently led a new initiative entitled, “Wellness through Sports.” The program was designed to teach kids practical skills to improve nutrition, physical activity, and stress management while promoting participation in youth sports. For five weeks at the Dunbar Community Center, Springfield College faculty members and students led youngsters through a program teaching the sport of volleyball. Participants included boys and girls ranging in ages from nine to 13 years old who learned fundamental volleyball skills; practical skills on making healthy nutrition choices; practical, fun ways to increase daily physical activity; and age-specific stress-management skills. The mission of the Center for Wellness Education and Research is to become

the preeminent provider of practical, individualized wellness solutions aimed at disease prevention.
