courage and diversity that existed in 1934 is an important lesson for kids today,” Purnell said. “There are never enough opportunities to help, especially children, understand we all need to respect each other.” For Andersen, he believes there are many


lessons to be learned from the American Legion Post 21 team. “If you look at the way sports has


changed over the last 20 years or so, the emphasis has increasingly been on winning and doing whatever needs to be done to win,” he said. “In 1934, this group of kids decided friendship and loyalty were more important than winning. Those values need to be resurrected.”1
