Who We Are
“Rich in history; embracing the future” perfectly describes the Kelowna Yacht Club and its contributions to the Okanagan community. While the club will be celebrating its 70th anniversary next year, many people don’t realize that the club is a member of one of the oldest forms of sports organizations in the world with almost 300 years of nautical knowledge and tradition. Our members share reciprocal privileges with North America’s oldest yacht club, the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron in Halifax, which was formed in 1837.
During the fall of 1945 a group of power boat owners and others who were interested in the future of boating on Okanagan Lake met to discuss ways and means to form a club and promote boating of all kinds in and around Kelowna. There was very little interest or activity in boating anywhere in the Okanagan at the time and, with the Second World War just over, this group believed something could and should be done about it. These early visionaries began by building a boat launch, followed by moorage facilities behind an existing breakwater, and in 1951 the old CKOV radio station building was moved onto the site to serve as the first clubhouse. That old industrial site is now the north end of Stuart Park; the centrepiece of Kelowna’s waterfront park system.
