The summer after the winter before…

Okay, so get your gloves on, wear a warm suit and don’t forget your helmet, which will shield you from the frozen elements. At this point you might be wondering if you are reading the correct edition of

Mid Kent Living. This one is for summer, according to the front cover, which must mean the stars of the show are sun, sea and sausages on the barbecue, right?

Well, yes and no. Yes, we have a huge number of event ideas, plenty of tips on outdoor activities involving summer clothes and we give you the lowdown on retreats where leaves are out in their full mid-year glory.

But we also take you back to the winter, to the cold dark nights when the trees were

resting and the rain would not stop falling. Illuminating this bleak time was local lass Lizzy Yarnold, who claimed Great Britain’s

only gold medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. The scale of this achievement is summed up by the fact that only nine people or teams

from our shores had achieved this honour before Lizzy, who grew up in Kent and studied at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls, won gold in the skeleton discipline.

Travelling head-first in a sled on ice at speeds of 80mph with no brakes is not, to

put it mildly, for the faint-hearted, yet the 25-year-old has remained completely down to earth in her approach.

Jane Shotliff finds out how Sevenoaks-born Lizzy copes with all the

attention she has received since Sochi, and what the future holds for one of the sporting stars of the year.

Oh, and that summer thing I mentioned earlier? Turn over the pages and read all about it!
