‘Fabulous folly-filled delight of a garden; a hidden gem’
IF you’ve been meaning to visit Great Comp near Sevenoaks, this summer provides the perfect opportunity to feast your eyes on one of the finest collections of hardy salvias in Europe. There’s also a chance to come away with your
own collection of plants from Dyson’s Nurseries in the grounds and try out its wonderful Old Dairy Tearooms. Build an appetite exploring these wonderfully quirky
gardens, showcasing seven acres of beautiful and rare plants in the grounds of a grand 17th century manor house. This hidden gem features an Italian garden, romantic ruins and enchanting woodland walks.
Great Comp’s
curator, William Dyson, runs Dyson’s Nurseries in the grounds, which specialises in salvias. He said: “Great Comp has one of the largest collections of hardy salvias in Europe and this June we are planting a large border with these fantastic plants, following their recent RHS Wisley trials, which will be on show throughout
the year and will provide one of the largest displays of Salvias in the country.” In spring, these tranquil gardens boast magnolias, azaleas
and rhododendrons, with ornamental grasses punctuating the colourful borders with the myriad colours of late autumn.
The gardens are the creation of Roderick and Joy Cameron,
who moved to Great Comp in 1957. They opened them to the public in the 1960s. The gardens are now maintained by William Dyson, two full-time and one part-time gardener and a small team of volunteers.

April 1 to October 31 Daily from 11am – 5pm (Last entry 4pm)
August 9 & 10 Great Comp’s Summer Show Now in its 12th year. A perfect mix of plants,
crafts, Pimms on the lawn and jazz.
October 11 & 12 Autumn Extravaganza Craft Fair Local artisan food producers and craft stalls take root in the garden at the height of its autumn splendour.
