July 30 Family Birdwatching Capstone Farm Country Park, Gillingham A birdwatching experience for the whole family. Learn about the birds and other wildlife that live within the country park’s woodlands and grasslands. The country park is home to many different species. No experience necessary. August 2 & 3 WW1 Memorial Weekend, Kent Life, Heritage Farm Park, Maidstone To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the start of WWI there is a weekend of special events and activity with free admission to all current serving forces members and veterans. Event organisers have worked in conjunction with the Aylesford branch of the Royal British Legion to create a special memorial area, which will display pictures and film footage featuring local WWI veterans. WWII veterans will also be in attendance to share their memories. Other activities on offer at the 28-acre site will include ‘make your own poppy’ workshops and themed guided tours of the Vintage Village.
August 4 - 7 Maidstone Art Society exhibition, County Gallery, Maidstone Up to 50 local artists contribute to the exhibition, working in both traditional and contemporary styles. There is something for all to enjoy and from which to gain inspiration.
August 9 - November 1 Teddy Bear Story, Maidstone Museum This is a heart-warming exhibition featuring almost 100 teddy bears, including many rare and diverse examples of the popular toy, as well as teddies from books, films and television programmes.
August 12 Flying Fish, Riverside Country Park, Gillingham Have you ever seen a fish fly? Well, now is your chance to make it happen. Design and create your very own flying fish and test it out on the riverside breeze. Suitable for accompanied children aged four to 12. Admission is £3 per child. Sessions: 10am to 11am and 11am to noon. Book in advance on 01634 337432.
August 13 Charity Open Day for National Gardens Scheme Marle Place, near Horsmonden Special Wednesday open day. Open between 5pm and 8pm with cream teas. Admission rates are standard, all proceeds going to the NGS.
August 20 Broadstairs Water Gala Free entry access to a day of fun at Broadstairs beach and promenade. There will be mini golf, teddy bears’ picnic, fun fair, volleyball, tug-of-war, kayaks, sand castle competitions and crafts. There will also be live music at the bandstand, fireworks, jet skis and flyboarding displays.
