16 August Tinariwen Norwich Arts Centre

If you’re unable to get away on your hols this Summer, the next best thing for some pure escapism is to catch Tinariwen at Norwich Arts Centre this August. Tey’re a Grammy Award-winning, ever changing collective of Tuareg musicians and singers from the Sahara Desert in Mali. Tese days Tinariwen play their native instruments internationally almost continuously, and this year the group release their sixth album, recorded in another desert landscape, Joshua Tree, homeland of Queens of the Stone Age. Teir concerts are incredibly atmospheric, and by the end of the night you’ll honestly feel as though you’ve travelled to a very different place than St Benedict’s Street. Tis is a rare chance to see a very important musical group, who played the main stage at Latitude in July play an intimate venue, so snap those tickets up!

21-22 August Te Soundscope of Objects, Body & Spacial Awareness Norwich Puppet Teatre

Creative people of Norwich! Norwich Puppet Teatre is running an International Summer School this August, and although most events are now sold out, there are still spaces remaining for Rene Baker’s master class. It’s aimed at performers, musicians, directors and composers and looks at different aspects of combining sound, music and objects in visual theatre. Te aim is to learn how to go beyond using music as support for performance or performance to illustrate music, and reach a level of collaboration where both sound and object are partners in the theatrical experience. Explorations include manipulating objects to create live soundscapes and examining how sound can be used to support or subvert the expectations created by the object and vice versa. Rene has worked in professional puppet theatre for over 20 years as a performer, director, designer, teacher and researcher and has led workshops in festivals all over Europe.
