INTRODUCTION

“Our bodies were printed as blank pages to be filled with the ink of our hearts”

It’s summer. Your delicious and delightful flesh is coyly back on show after many months of being encased in woollies, and you have the opportunity to be fully decorated. As if you could GET any prettier, right? Yes indeed, Norwich Body Art Festival is back for its sixth year!

My earliest experience of the tradition of marking one’s body permanently was when my first serious boyfriend scratched my name onto his upper arm with a compass during GCSE Biology and filled it in with biro. It’s a thin and painful line between love and danger, people; it was a pretty bad idea (always go to a proper tattoo studio, kids!) but he did it ‘cos it he meant it, and it was 4 real. And tattoos are all about the biggest feeling in your heart, maybe not 40 years down the line, but for you, here, today, and now. And now, several years later, with several actual tattoos on my own fair epidermis, I’d like to introduce YOU to the world of inking.

multitude of different styles. We also had mega fun with our entertainers, including Dr Sketchy’s Anti-Art School (who will be returning this year) and the Teatre of Escapades, and partied with loads of exciting tattoo artists from all over the country.

Tis year we will be based once again at the stunningly spiffy Open, and the wonders on show will be many and various. Tattooing guru Xed leHead will be in attendance, with his debut art exhibition, along with the beautiful artwork of Dawnii Fantana from Painted Lady in Birmingham. At the time of writing we have more than 23 different tattoo studios representin’, and 60 artists inkin’. If you’re not sure who would be best to choose for your own special markings, why not check them out online or on Facebook ahead of time or have a look on our official website www.norwichbodyartfestival.co.uk.

If you want to actually get a tattoo done while you’re at the festival, you will need to book with the artist you want to tattoo you in

advance, as well as buy an entry ticket to get into the festival.

If you fancy coming to just have a look and admire the work being done, that’s cool too! You’ll just need an entry ticket.

Entry tickets will be available on the door although numbers are limited.

Big thanks to…

If you are already fully involved in body art, or whether it’s all a bit new and scary to you, we’re here to guide you through stamping your past, present and future identities onto your physical self. Te ancient arts of tattooing and piercing continue to grow in popularity, and it’s rare in 2014 to see a youngish person on the streets without even a tiny bit of ink on them. However, just because it’s popular, should you join in? We advise you, just like my mum always has, not to jump off the cliff just because your friend does; remember to think before you ink! Last year went down an absolute storm and we had around 80 tattoo artists working all weekend on a

Te tattoo community for their continued support and encouragement.

It’s not all ‘no pain, no gain’, people, at this most special of Norwich weekends. We’ve got performances from amongst others, eight-piece local skiffle band Te Lovin’ Handful, Jug Jaw Beat Club regulars Lank Smith & Te Pythons, and the mysterious funambulist Anaspitos, who tours the world walking at heights on rope. Sure, you’ve heard of burlesque. But what about BOYlesque? Tis is 2014 so we reckon it’s about time the men got in on the act. Local vaudevillian performer Lou Safire will be demonstrating his sexy routines with a bohemian streak, alongside his circus skills and traditional freak show stunts! Plus loads more stuff involving fire and chainsaws! Fuck yeah!

If you’re interested not only in tattoos but also in my second favourite activity of all time, shopping, hell you can do that too. We have a wide selection of stalls selling all kindsa alternative goods, including wicked threads from Sacred Stitches all the way from Brighton, an ubercool charity raffle, sponsored by Dr Martens, Norwich’s own Rock Collection, and the vintage rockabilly offerings of the Vince Ray Experience. Total Tattoo Magazine will be in the building and we’ll have our very own Outline photographers to catch you out on camera as well.

So maybe this is the year you pluck

up your courage and get tattooed, in a safe and welcoming environment, unlike GCSE Biology class.
