HEY LADIES! It’s time for you to put pen to paper and fingers to guitar. Super songwriters Fiona Bevan and Kal Lavelle, who are well established in the music

industry themselves as solo artists with their soulful, indie, pop songs, are visiting Norwich to help us learn how to write our own songs with confidence. Fiona and Kal, who have worked with Ed Sheeran and released lots of their own music themselves through the years, were surprised to learn that that only 13% of people

registered with the PRS (the society of songwriters, composers and music publishers) are women. So with the help of Folkstock Arts Foundation, they have chosen some great venues all over the country not only to play double headliner gigs at, but also

to give YOU the chance to attend a FREE song writing master class for women. Also, they chose their support acts from amongst local musicians to inspire you further. They’ll be visiting the Bicycle Shop at the end of August. Let’s find out how these lovely ladies came up with this genius idea.

How would you describe the music you write as individuals? KalTe music I write is a culmination of various genres…it’s indie, folk, soul, pop…but more than anything else it’s edgy. Tere’s always an undercurrent of darkness. FionaI describe my music as soulful folk pop… the pop side of it I try to make clever and interesting, and less annoying and catchy. I try to make my music lyrical and pastoral and I use a lot of metaphors.

How did you start writing song, and what advice would you give to someone who wanted to give it a try? Kal I started when I was about 10 and just kept going. My advice for someone would be just to do it…and come to our master class! When I
