ART AT NBAF
Tis year we’re lucky enough to have an exclusive exhibition by Xed leHead, and a revolutionary raffle courtesy of Dr Martens.
Living, Dying and the
Art of Falling Apart Digital art exhibition by Xed leHead
Xed leHead is a true legend amongst tattooists. His work is the most intricate and detailed I’ve ever seen. Obsessed with patterns and geometric shapes, he’s been tattooing for over 30 years. He started when he inked his own hand at the age of 13, and then moved onto his friends. Travelling and working all over Europe during his time as a tattoo artist has meant that he has amassed an incredible amount of experience and knowledge of his craft. He now runs his own North London studio Divine Canvas, and although he’s had moments of self doubt where he’s stopped tattooing for a couple years, he’s back on track now. His fascination with Tibetan calligraphy and religious imagery and writings really comes through in his art. Norwich Body Art Festival are delighted to announce that Xed is holding his first ever art exhibition here this year. He’s been through some tough times; let’s hear from him why he has decided that now is the right time to exhibit his art.
Tis is my first ever exhibition. I wanted to share what happened to me creatively when removed from my comfort zone of monochrome geometry and tattooing. I moved into the alien world of hospice care, to witness the demise and ultimate deaths of both my parents in quick succession. I didn't know such imagery exists in me until I found myself in a long dark tunnel with no escape; I desperately needed a splash of colour to brighten the days.
You can discover more about Xed at
www.xedtattoo.com. Be warned; there’s a beautiful geometric patternmade up of images of his own penis as the homepage. And it’s tattooed.
NBAF 2014
CHARITY RAFFLE TO WIN HELLA SPECIAL TATTOOED DR. MARTENS BOOTS!
Dr Martens first stomped onto the scene in 1960, and ever since have reflected the many underground cultures in Britain; skinheads, punks, goths, rockers, grunge, Britpop and all the way up to the present time. Te bootmakers extraordinaire will be representin’ and supporting subcultures again at the Norwich Body Art Festival, and boy do we love ‘em for it.
Dr. Martens will be holding a raffle to give away a pair of boots decorated by exhibiting artists. DM’s! With tattoos! I can’t imagine anything cooler. To enter the raffle you just have to visit the Dr. Martens stand at the festival and buy a ticket (all proceeds are going to a multiple sclerosis charity); you can also pick up a flyer entitling you to 15 per cent discount in the Norwich store.
Joni from the Dr. Martens store in Norwich, is well on board with this ace competition and told us there’s a natural affinity between Dr Martens and the world of tattoos.
“Our customers aren’t afraid to express themselves. Tey make bold choices with fashion and footwear and, of course, body art. Te talent on show will be mind-blowing. I can’t wait to see what they can do with a pair of our boots.”
Me neither, Joni, me neither. So don’t forget to visit the Dr Martens stall at the festival, peeps.
