Could Medical Marijuana (Cannabis) Be Right for You?

M

edical cannabis seems to be in the news almost every day lately, as we re- discover the safety and therapeutic potential of this natural herb. If you think

that cannabis therapy might be helpful to you or a loved one, here are some facts and tips you should consider:

1. You don’t have to smoke it. Vaporizers (similar to nebulizers), edibles, and topical preparations are all discreet, alternative methods to smoking cannabis. 2. You don’t have to “get high.” Many varieties of cannabis contain relatively

lower levels of THC, the active compound that creates the psychoactive effect. 3. Medical cannabis is safe. Medical cannabis cannot cause a fatal overdose, and it can be used safely with most prescription medications. Many patients fi nd that it helps them reduce the number of other drugs they use, particularly prescrip- tion opiates. 4. You might have to do some homework. Some physicians are hesitant to cer- tify patients to use cannabis because it falls outside the “normal” FDA-approved framework for Western medicine. Be prepared to share the science with your health care provider—the Publications page at Americans for Safe Access (www.safeaccessnow.org) is a great place to start. 5. You’ll need a reputable, reliable provider. Maine’s dispensaries are state-regulated and inspected resources for clean medi-

cine, a variety of delivery devices, extensive education, and other wellness services. Maine patients can also grow their own plants, or fi nd a caregiver to grow for them.
