10 Reasons Why Massage is Good for Your Health

By Healther Piper, LMT 1. Promotes a healthy sleep:

With all the troubles that we have sleeping, massage can help. There are a number of studies, which confirm massage increases the delta waves in your brain, which are linked to deep sleep. Have you ever fallen asleep during massage?

Habits for better sleep include: • Eliminating caffeine after 3 pm.

• Create a peaceful space in your bedroom, which doesn’t include electronic gadgets, yes, even the Smartphone. Waking up frequent- ly at night to check your email or social media will cause you to stay up longer instead of getting right back to sleep. Your email can wait till the morning, I promise.

• Remove the TV from the bedroom. A bedroom is a restful sanctu- ary. The next episode of House of Cards will be there when you get up in the morning.

• Add room darkening curtains or shades if you live in areas with nighttime light or if your bedroom is on the morning sun side of the house.

2. Ease those sore muscles from your workouts:

Massage is especially effective for aches like low-back pain. Mas- sage works better than common treatments including chiropractic therapy and acupuncture. Massage boosts your feel-good hormones serotonin and dopamine. All of this leads to a reduction in sore muscles. Massage increases blood flow to the muscles, which will help you to recover faster; this gets you back to your sport or your exercise faster.

3. Reduction in PMS symptoms:

Massage can reduce the PMS symptoms of pain, water retention, and mood swings. Although it’s unclear how massage can do all that; we are sure of one thing-it works. Clients report having fewer symptoms of PMS when receiving regular massage.

4. Stay healthy:

Many don’t realize it’s cold season year round. Being warm outside doesn’t mean you won’t still get a cold. It is important to stay healthy all year round. Massage boosts your disease fighting white blood cells. In addition, the stress reducing effects of massage help keep you healthy. This and supplemental vitamin C and D, all help to keep your immune system strong.

5. Help you stay alert:

Are you dragging by late afternoon wishing for that coffee or candy bar fix? Treat your body so much better and receive a 15 minute seated massage. Massage can help you stay alert. You’ll perform better, work faster, and more efficiently. That and good is infectious to your co-workers making for a better day at the office for all!

6. Reduce headaches:

$13 Billion is lost in the workplace due to headaches. Massage prices vary, though they are in the range of $50-$150 for varying lengths of time. Regular massages can reduce the frequency of your headaches and their associated pain. Compared to the days of lost work massage is a small cost to keep you feeling your best.

7. Improved circulation:

How about a face massage? Massaging the face improves circula- tion plumping up slack skin, improving lymphatic drainage, and removing metabolic wastes, which allow nutrients to return. When your massage therapist gives your face muscles a work out as part of your massage, the improved circulation to your face and facial muscles eases eyestrain, headaches, and teeth grinding. All of this adds vitality to dull complexion and hair as well. In the same way that your face is revitalized, massage for your legs and arms im- proves circulation to those areas too!
