duced knee pain, but also restored proper tracking of the kneecap and tibiofibular joint.

Menisci are wedge shaped cartilage structures located between the femur and the tibia. Meniscal injuries often accom- pany twisting injuries of the leg that occur while full weight is on the foot. Swelling occurs after several hours and walking up and going up or especially down stairs becomes painful. Clinical evaluation shows that ante- rior knee pain (at the front of the knee), is typically associated with Sacroiliac joint dysfunction and iliopsoas, or hip flexor imbalance. This also occurs as a result of piriformis muscle imbalance, as explained earlier.

If I’m Locked Into My Pedals, How Can I Become Mis-Aligned?

Cycling has become a large part of

many people’s exercise regiments. The advantage to cycling over running is that much less heel strike type impact is put on the joints, especially the knees and lower back. However, it can also cause a new set of aches and pains. Cycling related knee or hip pain is often caused by incor- rect foot position, which may result from positioning the saddle too far forward or too low. Along with correcting the saddle set up, research demonstrates that restor- ing proper balance to the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles assists in pain relief and injury prevention. Many people believe that while the

cycle is working their lower body, they are significantly reducing strain to the upper body. We commonly have patients with

shoulder issues tell us that they “rested their upper body and only cycled this weekend.” Although your legs are the driving forces on the bike, your upper body is being supported, primarily by your shoulders, with your hands forward on the handle bars throughout the ride. Even while coasting and allowing your legs to rest, the weight of your upper body is still loaded firmly on your arms and shoulders and wrists, creating micro-trauma to the wrist and shoulders...............yes, even on your 10-25 mile rides.

Treat Yourself On Your Schedule, Not Your Injuries’ Schedule

Rather than treating an injury once it happens, causing you to suspend the ac- tivities you enjoy, why not have a mainte- nance plan, on your schedule, and avoid the injury in the first place? Chiropractic Healing Arts Center can help and inform you on ways to lower your likelihood of injury before the injury or overuse can occur. Everyone is a unique situation and the specific cause of imbalance and injury needs to be approached as such. One person’s activities and health level may re- quire biweekly sessions to stay in balance during intense training for an upcoming event. However, most can be effectively helped to maintain their enjoyment of activities with a maintenance schedule. Just as your muscle tone and body weight require lifelong maintenance, your spine and extremities also require maintenance, especially when these structures bear the impact and the weight load. The choice is yours to be in pain and inactive as a result, or to find the source of the problem and

fix as well as further prevent problems. The chiropractic approach to preventing chronic sports injuries aims to eliminate possible risk factors before the onset of pain and injury.
