» Editor’s Note Rethinking the Box T

his past March, the Fitness Business Canada team travelled to San Diego to attend IHRSA's 33rd annual International Convention and Trade Show (see “IHRSA 2014 Showcases

Fitness Innovation & Leadership" on page 12). The event, held at the San Diego Convention Center, featured inspiring keynote pre- sentations from fascination expert Sally Hogshead, best-selling author Dan Heath, entrepreneur and social media specialist Gary Vaynerchuk, and innovation strategist Luke Williams. Williams gave a particularly compelling talk on the concept of

disruptive thinking as he challenged stakeholders in the fitness in- dustry to not just think outside the box when it comes to new ideas

and concepts, but rather to flip the box over entirely and challenge the status quo. Consider his example of the recent evolution in the rental car industry:

Disruptive evolution model (e.g., Zipcar, Auto Share) • hourly rentals • no paperwork

• don't see the customer What’s your transformational disruptive idea for the fitness industry? Send your sugges-

tions to fbc@fitnet.ca, and we'll include the best ones in an upcoming issue. Innovation was certainly in high gear on the trade show floor which featured many new

product and service launches, including Technogym’s functional training system OMNIA and MyDesign Studio from Cybex. Check out our expanded “What’s New” product and service section on page 16 for an

overview of these and many other products from the show, and visit our website (www.fit- nessbusinesscanada.com) for demos filmed onsite. We look forward to our next major industry event, the canfitpro International Fitness

and Club Business Conference and Trade Show being held in Toronto August 6-10, featur- ing keynote speaker and four-time Olympic gold medalist Hayley Wickenheiser. Watch for our July/August issue which will include a full conference overview.
