ike many new Pilates instruc- tors, Dana D'Abreo began her teaching career with basic Pilates mat classes.


Today, eleven years later, D'Abreo is


the owner of ProActive Pilates in Port Coquitlam, B.C., an 800 sq. ft. home- based studio where she continues to teach mat classes to a wide cross-sec- tion of people, from rehab clients to na- tional team athletes. She has also advanced her Pilates


skills and now offers instruction with a Reformer and numerous small pieces of equipment, including Pilates circles, bands, small prickly balls and weighted toning balls. “A good Pilates class can be taught


without equipment,” says D'Abreo, who is also a physiotherapist and who teaches 25 hours of privates and 10 to

change the focus of the exercise or to deepen the muscle activation to al- low for increased body awareness dur- ing the movement pattern,” she says. “Equipment allows you to challenge the client by making it more or less stable for them.
