are thanks to these military origins, the particular circumstances of its entry into the civil market, based on the timing and scale of production in the USSR, allowed for such a quantity of aircraft to be available for the market that in the 1990s and well into the new century, competition allowed for costs of operation that were never before matched for such a specialised aircraft. This in itself encouraged more use of the type and certainly helped expand its market share and demand.

Although relatively underpowered and certainly suffering from fuel consumption levels more common to aircraft of the first generation of jet transports, these relatively few shortcomings of the original IL-76T/TD were corrected thanks to the modernisation programme which resulted in the IL-76TD-90 with Volga-Dnepr’s support; with an enhanced payload, reduced fuel burn and new avionics, the aircraft comfortably meets more stringent noise and environmental requirements introduced in the EU and developed markets in recent years. This has allowed the Ilyushin to remain a viable and cost effective option for the transportation of commercial outsize and heavy cargo from and to airports in developed economies. This niche will remain for decades to come and the modernisation programme has assured the future of one of the best airlifters designed.’

‘The IL76 can accommodate certain loads at a price that no other aircraft can match.’

‘The IL-76 is one of the most frequently chartered aircraft in Chapman Freeborn Group because of its capacity and ability to fly into remote locations. One

‘Having access to an aircraft with these kinds of capabilities is a real plus for us in Canada and therefore it is invaluable to have an aircraft such as the 90VD that can be

of its major benefits in the Australian market is its self-contained crane and winch system and capability to operate from airports with little or no loading devices. It is a perfect solution for outsize cargo that does not fit into B747 or AN- 12 aircraft. We have been particularly successful with its use in the north west oil and gas region of Australia, and were able to support critical rig breakdowns from Europe, utilising the versatility of the aircraft. 90VD with PS-90A-76 engines provides significant operational benefits such as increased take-off thrust and upgraded power-to-weight ratio. It is currently the only civil aircraft in the world in the 30-50 tonnes capacity sector capable of transporting outsize cargo to any airport. With increased payload, reduced fuel consumption and extended flight operating range, it makes a cost-effective solution for our clients.’

utilised without time-consuming delays. The IL76 can accommodate certain loads at a price that no other aircraft can match that’s available in Canada. Despite having a similar capacity to the Western-made 747, it can be loaded with pieces that would be too high and long or wide to fit through the nose or cargo door of the Boeing. The huge oil and gas market in Canada requires an aircraft that can load heavy and outsized items such as pipes and generators, but that can also offer a cost effective solution.’
