The KazSat-3 will provide Kazakhstan with a range of telecommunications services. The satellites will be sent into orbit onboard the Proton-M launch vehicle.

AN-124 DELIVERS RUSSIAN AND KAZAKH SATELLITES TO BAIKONUR COSMODROME LAUNCH SITE

A Volga-Dnepr Airlines’ An-124-100 ‘Ruslan’ freighter aircraft delivered the Luch-5V and KazSat-3 telecommunications satellites from Krasnoyarsk in Russia to Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome.

The satellites, weighing a combined 21 tons, were secured inside a special shipping container for the transportation, measuring 14 metres long, 3 metres wide and more than 4 metres high. The container was placed carefully onto the aircraft’s loading ramp using an external crane and then winched into the cargo hold

using the An-124’s own onboard handling system. The flight also carried support equipment for the satellites.

Following the safe arrival of the aircraft and its cargo in Kazakhstan, Volga-Dnepr delivered the satellite container back to its manufacturer in Krasnoyarsk.

Alexander Prokofiev, Senior Load Planning and Logistics Engineer at Volga-Dnepr Airlines, said: “A satellite is a very high- tech, high value and delicate piece of cargo that requires special handling throughout the transportation process. We were required to meet an extremely tight timescale for this particular flight and had to ensure the aircraft and all of the external loading equipment we needed was ready to load the satellites as soon as they arrived at the airport from their production site in the city of Zheleznogororsk. The successful completion of the delivery reflected the detailed planning prior to the flight and the close cooperation with our customer, Max-Global Foreign Logistics and the manufacturer, JSC Information Satellite Systems - Reshetnev Company.”

HELICOPTERS CROSS THE ATLANTIC FOR HELI EXPO 2014

Four helicopters bound for Heli Expo in Los Angeles, the world’s largest helicopter show, have crossed the Atlantic onboard one of Volga-Dnepr’s An-124-100 freighters.

The helicopters were loaded at Italy’s Milano Malpensa Airport for the airline’s customer, AgustaWestland, one of the world’s leading helicopter manufacturers. As part of its ‘cargo supermarket’ service offering, Volga-Dnepr also organised road transport to deliver the helicopters from Los Angeles Airport to the exhibition site.

Alexey Stepanov, Duty Load Planner at Volga-Dnepr Airlines, said: “We adopt

special procedures for the movement of helicopters because big helicopters require a special load plan. This usually includes removing and packing the blades so they can be transported on the flight with the helicopter along with other equipment and spare parts. Sometimes horizontal stabiliser blocks or strap-on tanks have to be uninstalled and the loading and unloading is usually assisted by the use of

a special ramp extension or tow bar.”

In the last 10 years, Volga-Dnepr has operated 739 flights delivering helicopters; 634 onboard Antonov-124-100 ‘Ruslan’ aircraft and 105 onboard Volga-Dnepr’s Ilushin-76TD-90VD freighters.

This latest contract was completed within the Ruslan International An-124 joint venture.
