£40m eco park HADLOWCollege has submit- ted a plan to create a £40m green technology business park at Betteshanger, Deal. The park would also include

a research and development centre and a place for visitors to find out about the site’s min- ing history. It could create up to 1,000

jobs and attract 100,000 visitors a year, if approved. Speaking about the project,

the college’s finance director Mark Lumsdon-Taylor said: “Our board of governors and executive management have taken a leap of faith in believ- ing we can pull off a scheme of this dimension, a first of its type in the further education sector. “We hope that it might en- courage other educational in- stitutions to follow our lead. There is opportunity – and real need – for the development of similar projects.” The project is said to have at- tracted community grants and £11m of private sector funding and work could start as early as June.

MPmeets hosts who share and change lives

LOCALMPTracey Crouch shared coffee and cake with families who open up their homes to vulnerable adults as part of KCC’s Shared Lives scheme. The service provides short breaks, day care support and longer-term accommodation for older people and people living with disabilities, mental health needs and dementia in the host family’s own home. Hosts are paid and are fully trained and supported by the serv- ice.

Host Sarah Phillips (32)was at the

event with her one-year-old daugh- ter Star. She said: “My mum has been a Shared Lives host for 11 years. One day, I just thought, ‘It’s time for me, now’. “You’ve got to be a caring person, understanding and want to give a part of your life up to nurture and help others to achieve their own goals.”

Danielle Caddick (22) has learn-

ing disabilities and has been living with host Linda Williams (66) for four years. She said: “I used to go to
