clean-up bid A CAMPAIGN has been launched to clean up the pave- ments and streets of Snodland and to keep them clean. Alan Keeley, a member of Snodland Town Council, said Snodland Goes Cleaner has the support of Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, the town council, a number of local businessmen and local residents. He has spoken to the Cham-

ber of Commerce and has now started calling on every shop- keeper, urging them to keep clear the areas outside their shops. The campaign started in Dit-

ton, Larkfield and New Hythe, and Stuart Olsson has at- tended ameeting of the group to give ideas on how best it can work. Members of the committee

will walk round the town regu- larly giving points for shop- keepers who are taking part. “We will be giving out an illu- minated parchment for busi- nesses to display in their shops,” said Alan. “People who walk round a clean town are more likely to use the shops. I am 100% behind this and believe Snodland will be better for everybody. “I will also be talking to the

pupils in the schools in Snod- land. It is better to teach the young as soon as you can.”

Bikers’ club charity night

OVER 100 people attended a charity night organised by Friends and Bikers Motorcycle Club and raised £1,700 for Macmillan Can- cer Support. The event took place at Snod-

prizes were donated by P&OFer- ries, Kent Motorcycles, East Kent College, DG Autos, Sevenoaks, and supporters who attended.

He said the charity was chosen because FAB treasurer Jan Chan- dler had recently undergone can- cer treatment andwas looked after by Macmillan nurses. FAB chairman Pete Gunning

said funds left in the account of Townsend Hook Sports and Social Club, which folded four years ago, had been donated to charity. Macmillan had received £1,000. Other donations had been made to Demelza House, Kent Air Am- bulance, RNLI, Heart of Kent Hos- pice and British Heart Foundation.

June 20, 1920, by Rear-Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee. Snodland Museum curator An-

drew Ashbee said: “The design is the same as the Whitehall Ceno- taph by Sir Edwin Lutyens. We don’t know who made it – proba- bly a firm commissioned by the government, since no local men are mentioned in the minutes.” The local minutes are online at snodlandhistory.org.uk/parish- councilminutes.

Work starts on first phase of football ground’s up-grade

WORK will start soon erecting the perimeter fence around Snodland Town Football Club’s ground at Potyns Sports- ground.

The FA Football Stadia Im- provement Fund approved a grant to help towards the cost.

Town Talk reported last Au-

gust that the club had signed a 30-year lease for the ground from Snodland Town Council.

Mel Rayfield, chairman of the

club, said: “This work marks the first phase of developing

our ground. It will give security and private access to our pitch, and we hope that we can also construct a spectator barrier around the pitch before the start of next season.

“Work to improve the playing surface will also be included in the first phase.”

The second phase of the de- velopment is to apply for plan- ning permission to erect floodlights and a clubhouse with changing rooms. The building will incorporate a 57-

seat spectator stand with toilet, hospitality and food facilities for spectators, including those who will be attending matches on the new Potyns pitches.

“This phase will obviously re-

quire a great deal of grant money in order to complete the project,” Mel continued.

“Fundraising will, as ever, be

top of our agenda to supple- ment our grant applications and a variety of events are planned in the next few months.”
