Call for housing sites as local plan is prepared
TONBRIDGE and Malling Coun- cil is asking landowners, develop- ers and the local community to identify possible sites for devel- opment so that they can be con- sidered in the preparation of a new local plan. The council is in the early stages
of the process and will have to find sufficient land to address the pro- jected need for new housing and jobs over the next 15 years. London-based planning consult-
ant G L Hearn, who has been com- missioned by Tonbridge and
Malling Council to carry out an in- dependent assessment to guide the plan, suggested a target of 13,000 new homes until 2031. With planning permissions al-
ready in the pipeline and windfall sites – plots that come forward un- expectedly – the borough has a supply of about 5,800 units, leaving it to find a further 7,200. Cllr Sue Murray, cabinet member
for planning and transportation, said: “It is going to be quite a chal- lenge for the council to identify suf- ficient land to address the housing
and employment needs of the bor- ough, but it is important that it looks carefully at all potential op- tions, otherwise it will be under pressure to release land in an un- plannedway.” She stressed that the processwas
at a very early stage and it did not necessarily follow that the land would end up being allocated for development in the local plan. The deadline for submitting pos-
sible sites is Friday, May 30. Full de- tails are on the borough council’s website.
