Les and Janet celebrate their golden wedding in Jamaica
MOSTmarried couples remember the year they met, but Les and Janet Yates can remember the time and date of their firstmeeting. They met at a dance class at
8pm on January 6, 195,8 and on March 30 this year they celebrated their golden wedding. Les was 16 and went to the
dance class with a friend. Janet, 14, had also gone to the class over Burton the tailors in Erithwith a friend. Everybody else had gone as a couple. “There were two single boys
and two single girls, so fate threw us together,” said Les. “We always celebrate on January 6, the day we met. “Janet wasmy first girlfriend and
I was her first boyfriend. We were engaged after two years andmar- ried after six.” They moved to Godden Road, Snodland, shortly after marrying. Les spent his whole working life
as a butcher with Dewhurst, retir- ing after 50 years in 2005. Janet trained as a tracer, making perma- nent copies of drawings for an en- gineering firm.
When she moved to Snodland
she did similar work for the land survey department at Kent County Council and recalls making per- manent copies of the drawings for the Church of England Primary School in Snodland. Les and Janet have three chil-
dren – Carol, Anne and Paul – and three grandchildren. They are both members of Snodland Town
Active Retirement Association (STARA) and Les, a keen swim- mer, is treasurer of Friends of All Saints’ Church, Snodland. Apart from horse racing, their
main interest is travelling around the world. Janet researches on the internet before they travel and they never go anywhere twice. They celebrated 50 years of mar- ried life in Jamaica.
Art club back
THE Beat Project’s Art Club has moved into the back room of Snodland Working Men’s Club, in Holborough Road. It will be held from 10am to

sions along with tutored and un- tutored sessions,” she added. Coffee and Chat sessions are
held at the club every Wednes- day.
Twin town visit
SNODLAND residents will be travelling to the town’s twin, Moyeuvre-Grande, in the north east of France from May 3-6. The Snodland Partnership
