Town Talk Bishop opens new classrooms

THE Bishop of Rochester, the Rt Rev James Langstaff, has opened two new classrooms at the Church of England Primary School in Snodland. Head teacher Holley Hunt said

the school made a bid for the two-classroom building and re- ceived £380,000 from LCVAP (Local Authority Co-ordinated Voluntary Aided Programme) Work started in September and was completed in February. “The building company was

Chris Brown Builders, whose staff were polite, helpful and efficient,” she told the gathering of parents and pupils.

“The project manager was

Clive Burrows, of Bennett Bur- rows Ltd.” The school will now have 14 classes in September – two-form entry throughout the school. “The classrooms will be used

by year 6 next year,” Mrs Hunt told Town Talk. “We are going to give the cur-

rent year 5 children some money to spend on developing the out- side area behind the new build- ing, so that they have space that is just for them.” The school is now bidding for

more funding to have the play- ground re-surfaced.

Eight flats planned at pub

THE owner of a derelict former public house has applied for planning permission to build eight flats on the site – two more than previously granted. The Red Lion at 96 High Street, Snodland is one of the oldest buildings in the town. In the December issue of

Town Talk we reported that safety fencing had been erected around the front, but this was taken down. The latest application to Ton- bridge and Malling Borough Council by ACS Ltd is for the part demolition of the building and an extension to create eight flats on three storeys. Snodland Town Council has objected because of concerns about the intensification of the building and lack of parking. The Red Lion was bought by

Kent County Council more than 30 years ago because it was expected that the Snod- land bypass would be widened. It was closed in 2004 and sold to ACS Ltd in

2007. The company was granted planning permission to extend the premises into three one and three two-bed- room flats. Because the work was not started on time the borough council granted a three-year extension. In December Town Talk quoted Dr Andrew Ashbee, chairman of the historical so- ciety and curator of the mu- seum, as saying documents showed the building was there in 1738, but he thought it was much older than that. There was evidence of a building on the site in the mid- dle of the 15th century.

to treat and the success rate of treatment is poor,” he said. The walk starts at 10am from Browndens Road car park, oppo- site Jubilee Hall, is 6.5km (4.2 miles) long and takes about two and a half hours to complete.
