SEAWEED SCOOPS innovation funding
Dear Editor
I was fl attered to see my photo in Fish Farmer this month [Jan/Feb 2014] in the section about the LANTRA awards – even if it did lead to a lot of leg-pulling (putting it mildly!) from my work-‘mates’ at Marine Harvest’s Lochailort hatchery – for the record I have lost over 4 stone in weight since those days [see picture above] and have a new job with Marine Harvest). It was also worrying to read that, according to LANTRA, there is a lack of young people coming into fi sh farming, which is why every bit of publicity they attract with their awards programme is so valuable. It is also very worrying that there seems to be a shortage of training facilities for youngsters wanting to get into the industry – for example I did my initial training at the Barony College in Dumfriesshire, which I believe is not running an aquaculture-related course this year?! What is going on! Surely an industry this size can do better if it wants a sustainable workforce? Jamie Hesketh

cultivate a range of high-value edible sea- weeds for the global food market for Mara’s range of premium seaweed products.
CHALLENGES Mara has been work-
ing with an established aquaculture business, Otter Ferry Sea Fish, to begin cultivating seaweeds for human consumption. In order to overcome the biological and technical challenges this repre- sents, SAMS – a global leader in seaweed cul- tivation research – will join the team in a true business/academia partnership. Seaweed consump-
tion has long been associated with good health and longevity. As of 2010 the global value of cultivated sea- weed has an estimated value of just over $12 billion. The majority of this production is for high value food, mainly consumed in China, Japan and Korea. There is a large and
developing market for premium seaweed- based products, which can be met by devel- oping cultivation tech- niques in the North

To address these challenges Mara has developed a busi- ness plan based on building a series of sea- weed cultivation facili- ties alongside its licence from The Crown Estate to harvest seasonal wild seaweeds around the Scottish coastline. In 2012 Mara won
a £5,000 TSB inno- vation award for a pre-pilot project, and this followed on with a £25,000 innovation award to develop a

of Mara, says: ‘This is a signifi cant step for our business, giving us a platform for growth. As a new business it is great to be teaming up with two established players in the aquacul- ture industry. FF
