should fuel processing boom AQUACULTURE IS A MAJOR FACTOR

CHARLES NORRIS T

HE market for processed seafood around the world is expected to reach over $211 billion within

the next four years, says a new report, with a compounded annual growth rate of 4.1 per cent a year between now and 2018. This expectation is also likely to bring similar growth in the seafood processing equipment market, which will be worth almost $1.5- billion by 2018, with a growth rate of 3.8 per cent a year. The report, from Research and

Markets.com, says the processing of seafood, which adds value by making it convenient for consum-

ers to cook and eat, has increased in popularity with a large percent- age of the global population. Processing of seafood involves cutting, gutting, cleaning and other functions, which aid in improving the taste, colour, and nutritional factors. Processing will also help in

preserving the seafood, which is otherwise highly perishable and improving its shelf-life. To provide the consumers with healthy sea- food products, various machines are required to process them. Various processes like cleaning, scaling, smoking, de-heading, and so on, are involved in processed seafood. Processors must make an appropriate choice of the equip-

ment that is used for processing seafood. The report says the market value of the global market by product type was $165,592.1 million in 2012 and is anticipated to be $211,210.7 million by 2018. ‘The products are exhibiting an optimistic growth, mainly driven by the changing lifestyles of the population and growth in the aquaculture industry,’ the report explains.

‘Shifts in the consumers’ prefer- ences have led to a rise in the demand for such processed sea- food products. They come under convenience food, which has made cooking for the seafood consum- ers easy and quick.’ FF

Processed products prove popular

The market for processed seafood is worth $165 billion
