UV Disinfection
maintenance friendly due to the self-cleaning design embodied into each system. The reasons UV disinfection sys-
tems were chosen by these two customers were that effl uent may be treated continuously (while processing), minimal supervision by operating personnel is required for use, and health and safety issues are greatly reduced when compared to chemical disinfection processes. Chemical disinfection of the blood-water, with its high organic loading, necessitates large amounts of chemicals due to the scavenging of chemical by the or- ganics, which becomes somewhat impractical and costly – especially
when residual disinfectant quench- ing is required due to discharge into natural receiving waters. UV disinfection technology has
now been proven effective via 3rd party validation for blood water ef- fl uent disinfection and can be easily
retro-fi tted into existing facilities that wish to meet impending regu- lations or explore the possibility of eliminating a chemical disinfection programme and reducing costs associated with treatment of blood water effl uent. FF
Occasionally farmed salmon held in sea cages are harvested when disease detection has occurred
