On 8th March we travelled with high hopes of a successful day at the Scottish Championships in Perth. Unfortunately our hopes were dashed when we underperformed and came ninth out of ten bands. The result was particularly disappointing considering the huge amount of time and effort that we had put in practicing for the contest. Laying to one side the vagaries of adjudicators interpretation and the fact that we were last band on at 8.30 at night (not ideal) we fell far short of the target we had set ourselves. The adjudicators’ main criticisms were of untidy playing and rhythmical inaccuracies coupled with those two perennial faults; poor tuning and a lack of dynamic contrast. Nevertheless, and despite our performance on the day, the band definitely benefited from all the extra practicing we put in, and so we now need to build on that, and work on the deficiencies which cost us points.

Christine Grant. Many people will, of course, know Christine as the smiling face behind the counter in the Medical Hall. Christine with husband Terry and family came to Peebles over 20 years ago and they are now emigrating to New Zealand. Over all these years Christine has been a loyal and committed member and has been tireless in her fund raising for, and promotion of, the Band. She will be greatly missed, not only as player, but also as good friend whose cheerful disposition and forthright opinions enlivened many a practice and social occasion. We wish Christine and Terry all the best for their new life in the antipodes and look forward to hearing their telegram read out on Beltane Saturday morning.
Later this month, on Palm Sunday, we will be playing at the Cross Kirk service before leading the congregation to their respective churches. A fortnight later our thoughts will turn to the Beltane when we will present a small concert in the Burgh Hall as part of the Cornet’s
Introduction night.
