10 The fine art of framing

It is not every day that most of us get a picture framed and it is reassuring to know that there are experts out there who can help us make the right decision to enhance our artwork. A visit to Tweed Art is an education in itself. Toby Watts has been framing for over 14 years and has built up a wealth of knowledge within this art. He is the only Fine Art Trade Guild Commended Framer in the Scottish Borders so you can rest assured that your precious art is in safe hands.

There is more to framing than just four bits of wood around a picture. Frames are used to enhance a piece of art aesthetically, as well as to protect it from dirt, dust and handling, while maintaining a controlled setting essential for the life of the piece.

Toby’s passion for his art is obvious when he takes you through the process of deciding on a frame for your picture. As he says, one of the lovely things about his job is that every piece he frames is different and he will encourage you to choose what pleases you and what works for the picture. Tweed Art provide free consultations on the best way to present and protect your art, relevant to the piece of work and your budget.

Don’t think framing is just limited to paintings, photographs, prints and certificates, Tweed Art also frame sports shirts, sporting and military medals and more unusual items such as the Beltane Queen’s headdress and Venetian masks. When Toby first learnt to make box frames he decided to try and frame his son’s first pair of shoes which have been displayed ever since in the shop and over the years many people have brought their own children’s shoes in for framing.

In order for your artwork to look perfect forever, it is important that good quality materials are used in the framing. At Tweed Art all the frames and mountboard are made from materials sourced from forests conforming to international forest certification schemes. The quality of mountboard varies considerably but Toby uses only the finest quality Artcare range and he also stocks seven different types of framing glass and acrylic, ranging from museum glass for ultimate protection, to economy glass, for when budget is the most important factor.

As well as framing, Tweed Art has an Artists Gallery featuring a selection of original art predominantly from local artists. Each month

they select an ‘Artist of the Month’ so the work on display is constantly changing. April’s artist of the month will be the renowned wildlife artist, Darren Woodhead. Darren was recently the Artist in Residence on the BBC’s Winterwatch programme filmed in the Cairngorms. He paints in watercolours, produced outside on location and drawn directly in brush. By working direct from life, he aims to retain the freshness and energy that working outside gives, and revels in working in often extreme weather conditions.

The Craft Makers Gallery showcases a wide range of ceramics, metalwork, glassware, sculpture, wood and jewellery – from makers around Peebles, the Scottish Borders and other parts of Great Britain. It is a great place to browse for gifts and they offer a gift selection service, where customers can make a wish list of their favourite items, so partners and friends can choose a gift with confidence. Alternatively, gift vouchers can be purchased and used for framing, art or gifts.
