A Beginner’s Guide to Computers


(OR, how I learned to stop worrying and love my laptop)


There’s a lot of assumed knowledge out there these days. Ask a friend to pop in the car and get your messages, we take for granted that there’s a car, lessons, a driv- ing licence, tax, MOT, insurance and navi- gational skills; then they don’t just walk out of the shop, we use something called money or chip and PIN.


Now someone on the telly says, “For fur- ther info, log onto our website at www.whatsawebsite.help.” That simple sentence assumes you have a computer, you know how to operate it, you have an ISP, a router, you know how to connect with all your usernames and passwords, open up a browser and find the address bar. When did I learn to do all that over- night? What does that even mean?!

But that’s not all. We cover the care of your electronic friend, from the correct methods of turning on and off PCs through basic husbandry, Internet safety, and have a wee bit of fun along the way.


Based on Windows 7, but applicable to XP, Vista and 8, the course includes:


• Use of individual laptop and camera • All training material • Reference book


• Stationery, PC consumables and record- able media • Tea, coffee and nibbles at half time


Open to adults of all ages, all you need to do is turn up with a willingness to forget what you think you know, a sense of curi- osity and a desire to learn the necessities. Where you go from there, well…


With a background in training, over the past 3 years I’ve identified a clear need for structured training to address what others take for granted.


The objective is that after five 2-hour les- sons (with breaks!) you have the necessary knowledge and confidence with which to


Beginning in April, the training will take place in Cavalry Park, Peebles over 5 Tues- day mornings. Classes are limited to a maximum of 8 per course. There is disa- bled access, toilets and kitchen facilities.
