Exciting end to another successful season

Music in Peebles prepares to bring its 2013/14 season to a close with two concerts in April, each of which offers

fresh insights along with some musical favourites.

Spanish pianist Maria Garzon has performed in major venues and festivals all over the world, has a number of acclaimed recordings to her credit and also has teaching posts at several prestigious institutions world-wide. Maria’s Peebles concert will include music from her native country and extracts from Elgar’s piano version of his famous ‘Enigma Variations’. She will also feature two Czech composers she is researching, J.L. Dussek (a contemporary of Mozart) and Viktor Ullmann, who wrote his Piano Sonata No.7 in Theresienstadt before being transported to Auschwitz where he was murdered.

Before the concert, there will be a screening of a documentary film, featuring Maria Garzon, about Viktor

Ullmann and his piano sonatas.

Sax Ecosse

Sax Ecosse is an exciting young Scottish saxophone quartet, founded in 2004 by four students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. They have had great success throughout the UK and in Europe, including a sold-out concert in last year’s Edinburgh Festival and a performance at Celtic Connections in 2012. Their programme combines arrangements of works by Bach and Grieg (his wonderfully tuneful and much loved Holberg Suite) with music originally written for saxophone quartet by Glazunov and Diana Salazar (a work commissioned by Sax Ecosse and given its world premiere by them in St. Andrews in 2012).

For this concert, Sax Ecosse will be joined by saxophonist/composer Jay Capperauld in place of

Michelle Melvin (pictured left, above). Maria Garzon
