31 The Bridge Latest news from The Bridge Tweeddale
Latest news from The Bridge Tweeddale The Bridge is part of a national network of Councils for Voluntary Service. We aim to represent and support the voluntary sector and to assist local organisations to get together for common purposes. We look to enable local people to gain access to decision-making processes which affect their lives and their communities.
COULD YOU BE A VOLUNTEER DRIVER?
Tweed Wheels, our Community Transport Initiative, makes a significant difference for many people in Tweeddale. We couldn’t provide this service if it wasn’t for our wonderful volunteer drivers who give freely of their time for the benefit of others and you could become part of that! We are looking to increase our driver pool so, if you have some spare time and enjoy driving, why not consider becoming one of our volunteer drivers? You will have the chance to drive for local community groups, using our 15-seater wheelchair accessible minibus, or individuals, with our 6-seater wheelchair accessible community car. We will provide you with appropriate training and support and out-of-pocket expenses and you will be free to drive as often or as little as you wish. Half-day training courses take place regularly. To find out more contact Rosa or
Anne at The Bridge. TWEEDDALE THRIFT SHOP< INNERLEITHEN
One of the services delivered by The Bridge is the Thrift Shop in Innerleithen. We are very proud of the shop and the service it provides; retailing recycled goods; offering volunteering opportunities; providing a valuable meeting point for local people; and raising much needed cash to support Tweed Wheels, our Community Transport service in Tweeddale. Many of you will be loyal to the Charity Shops in Peebles but please do consider donating items and shopping in the Thrift Shop in Innerleithen as, by doing so, you will be
directly supporting the local community. Local Citizens Panels
The Panels aim to give people with a learning disability and their family carers a voice in the way that services are planned, prioritised and delivered. They are an important part of the new Scottish Borders Learning Disability Service governance arrangements. You can join your local Panel if you live in the Scottish Borders, are aged 16+, have a learning disability or care for someone who has. There are 5 Panels covering the following areas:
• • • • •
Tweeddale
Galashiels & Selkirk Hawick & Jedburgh Kelso & Coldstream Berwickshire
The first Panel meetings are now successfully underway, but there is still plenty of time to contact us for further information, and to join this important initiative. New members are welcome to join at any time in the coming months, and family carer members in particular, in order that there is a balance in the membership. The Panels are a very positive way for people and families to get involved in making things better and having their say about the shape of opportunities and services for the years ahead.
