From Our Founder Remembering October 1979

Welcome to another edition of Remembering. When I put this column together my memory goes back to those great years in the development of the Canadian Horse Industry and those that were and in some cases still are an intricate part of the indus- try today. It has been a pleasure for myself and the various forms The Rider has taken over the last 43 years to have been a big part of the formation of the industry.

We keep losing those that were a big part of the industry. In this issue of The Rider we have lost Ed Jacques, William (Bill) Coyle, Cliff Haines as well as (relatively) new industry member Lacey Jamieson.

Back in October 1979 Al’s Tack Shop was gearing up for Christmas with a full page ad offering super savings.

The Rider reported on the resurgence of horse rustling in North America with the victims being slaughtered before they were reported missing.

The Ontario Rodeo Association announced their Awards Banquet for November 3,1979 at the Holi- day Inn on Warden Ave. in Toronto.

The Ontario Rodeo Finals were wrapped up on Thanksgiving weekend at the Western World Show and Horse Sale at Exhibition Place in Toronto. Susan Short of Roseneath, Ontario was selected as the ORA queen for the upcoming Rodeo season of 1980.

As part of the Oklahoma Centennial celebrations the state created a Will Rogers Commemorative Buckle. Boy I would like to have one of those now. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Will_Rogers

The State of Kentucky used horse power to assist in the installation of telephone cables across the steep hills and cliffs of the State.

and Ingrid and Kel Fraser and their families. Also surviving is his dear aunt Audrey Scantlebury, cousins Paul Gatschene and his wife Julie, Virginia Gatschene, Kim Brown and his wife Susan. He is predeceased by parents Reginald and Gertie and his father and mother-in-law Karl and Erna Their, his dear cousin Cathy Leasa (March 2013), his uncle George Scantlebury and cousin Doug Brown. Thank you Ed for a very courageous battle. please with the turn out of horses and riders at the CNE that year. Heather Bilyea of Granton, Ontario was crowned 1980 Queen.

Dr. John Hodges of the University of British Columbia was a guest speaker at the International Stockmen’s School in Tucson, Arizona in January 1980.

On November 24, the WHAO held their annual Banquet at the Tyendaga Golf Course in Burling- ton, ON. Tickets were a staggering $12.50 each.

Agriculture and Food Minister Lorne C. Henderson announced a new compensation package for farm- ers whose livestock were killed or injured by hunters, dogs or bears.

MY TURN: I recently had the misfortune to have been

forced to drive to Toronto for several days. By the time I got there I had road rage that lasted till I got home only to start again the next day. I am just wondering about those who drive to and from the Big Smoke daily to the banking and stock market district of downtown. The financial advisers and the free loaders at Queens Park. The lawyers at Osgoode Hall. Can you imagine the road rage they have when they get there? And they make deci- sions that effect all of our lives. No wonder we are in such a mess. Speaking of messes I heard a former rock and

roller turned talk show host from 900 CHML spouting off a load of unresearched jabberwocky about the horse racing industry getting hand outs. It would take too much time to explain here how out of touch he is as I’m sure are others of that ilk. Per- haps the racing industry spokesperson might con- tact him. In regards to my suggestion last issue that the

three Horse Racing Industry Panelists donate their $750.00 daily fees to the Horsemen’s Benevolent Fund or to horse rescue groups, I have not heard back.

Thank you for looking down in this corner.

In Memoriam: William (Bill) Koyle (1940-2013)

OTTAWA ON, October 9, 2013 — It is with regret that we recognize the passing of William (Bill) Koyle, a passionate volunteer and respected horseman, who passed away on October 2, 2013. “Bill had a huge impact on eventing in

Canada,” stated Equine Canada President Michael Gallagher. “He was truly one of the founding builders of the modern day eventing that we have in Canada today.” Koyle sat on numerous Equine Canada

committees and served as an Equine Canada and FEI Technical Delegate at many presti- gious events such as Tempel Farms Young Riders Championships (USA), Punchestown CCI (Ireland) and the Boekelo CCI (Nether- lands). Koyle played an integral role in the development of Canada’s Quadrennial Plan, developed with the objective of putting even- ters on the podium internationally. As the orga- nizer of Ridgewood Farms CCI, he hosted the Young Riders Championships and the first 2- star CCI in Canada. Koyle also served as Presi-

dent of the Ontario Horse Trails Association and was a Chair of Horse Trials Canada. “The Canadian Eventing Committee

expresses deepest sympathy to the family and friends of Bill Koyle,” stated Peggy Hambly, Chair of the Canadian Eventing Committee. “His enthusiasm for eventing and life will be sadly missed. From time to time Bill would combine his passions and could be seen “buzzing” such events as Will’O Wind in his WWII airplane.” Koyle retired from Equine Canada and

FEI duties over ten years ago to focus on his passion for aviation. He was Chairman of the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum in Hamilton and became very involved in the Great War Flying Museum in Brampton. On behalf of Equine Canada we extend

our sincerest condolences to his family, friends, and colleagues. A memorial service/celebration will be planned in the spring of 2014 in conjunction with the Canadi- an Warplane Heritage Museum.
