Getting the best possible feet under your horse with Equine Podiatry

By Kelly Bowers An Equine Podiatrist (EP) is an individual who

has studied the form and function of the equine foot, and everything that affects it. Their role is to not only pro- vide hoof trimming but, more importantly, holistic sci- ence-based advice on all aspects of hoof care to help you improve your horse's feet. The aim of an EP is to get the best possible

feet under your horse. They achieve this by effecting proper balance through trimming the feet to remove excess growth, correcting temporary defects in the foot shape/form and encouraging stronger new growth. While balanced trimming can have an important effect on the horse's hoof health, environmental factors like stabling and turnout arrangements, exercise regime and crucially diet, are also important factors an EP examines. Even saddle fit and rider position can impact how the hooves grow. Equine foot care has been changing as

an increasing number of horse owners discover the health and other benefits of having their horses go without shoes. While an EP is not trained (or legally allowed) to work with shoes and can only trim unshod equine hooves, they do provide foot and "whole horse" care advice for shod horses that can complement the work of a farrier.

Many common foot problems can be improved using the Podiatry approach, such as

navicular disease, flat feet, laminitis, cracks, quarter and toe cracks, and frequent abscessing. New techniques in hoof management are resulting in far better outcomes for these conditions but even horses that appear to have no major foot problems can benefit from improved hoof quality, often showing better gaits with a more expres- sive trot, smoother canter, etc., and generally improved performance. The Equine Podiatry approach was originally

developed in the USA by KC La Pierre. EP is well established in Europe and is currently practised in 13 different countries including Canada. The methods used by EPs who are members of the Equine Podiatry Associ- ation (EPA) are kept strictly up to date by compulsory Continuing Professional Development (CPD). This CPD ensures that EPA members work to a common high stan- dard and are exposed to the latest thinking both from within the profession and in related subject areas.
