NOVEMBER 2013 THE RIDER /19 A Day of Thanksgiving

By Krista Ellen-Mills Saturday, October 12, 2013 was truly a day to give

thanks for Rosie, Gunner and Sky. This is the day they arrived at Whispering Hearts Horse Rescue to begin their road to recovery. Rosie is estimated to be a 2-½ year-old Thorough-

bred mare, although she is so emaciated it’s hard to say for sure. Rosie’s Body Condition Score (“BCS”) is 0. Yes, zero. She weighs only 610 pounds and is covered in rain rot, as well as having a broken tooth. Unfortu- nately, until Rosie is well enough to be sedated, the tooth cannot be fixed. Gunner and Sky came on the same day but are

from a different farm, and arrived at WHHR thanks to the Niagara Falls Humane Society. Gunner is a 28-year-old Paso Fino gelding, and Sky

is a 13-year-old paint mare. Sky’s BCS is 0.5 and she is so very weak that she has fallen down several times in her stall. She is being kept in the arena so that if she falls down and needs help getting up or standing, there is room to help her up and room to hold her up with the Bobcat and a sling if need be. All three go into a stall just to receive their vitamin and health supplements (so their intake can be controlled), and then back out into the arena they go.

for a full recovery. On the morning of Saturday, October 19th

Sky went down again. After a week of good food and good care, her body has still not recovered enough to say she is out of the woods. Imagine what another week at her orig- inal home would have done... Rosie, Sky and Gunner add three more

mouths to feed. The herd at WHHR keeps growing and growing and soon, sadly, Brenda will have to start turning horses away. The res- cue is over capacity now and it seems as though the number of neglected and starving horses out there is not yet decreasing. The rescue has taken in horses throughout this entire year, rather than just over the winter as used to be the case.

The best way to help Whispering Hearts

right now is, if you can, to adopt one of the many horses who have completed their recov- ery and are now waiting for their forever homes. Many of the horses ready for adoption are shown on the website, but there are many more available who are not yet up on the site. If you are looking for a horse, please consider adopting one from WHHR to open up room for another rescue. You can complete an adoption application and Brenda will help you find “that” horse you have been waiting for – go to www.whhrescue.com for details. If you cannot adopt a horse, please consid-

er sponsoring a horse or donating funds to be used for new rescues and to care for the horses waiting for their new homes. Thank you for your continued support – you really are helping to save lives!

CANADA’S BEST DEALS IN HORSE TRAILERS Brenda and Dave Thompson, who run Whispering

Hearts with the assistance of many dedicated volunteers, spent the night of October 12th like so many others – watching, waiting, worrying. The morning of October 13th brought a Facebook post hundreds were waiting for: “Good news, all three horses are still standing this morning! Day one a success.”

The three spent the next few days just eating, sleep-

ing, and being loved. The first few weeks are so diffi- cult as they desperately need nutrition, but Brenda has to be very careful not to give them too much or too rich food, as their starved bodies cannot handle it. After almost a week at their new home, the

“Thanksgiving Horses” were doing well enough to be dewormed. The first week also brought damp and cool- er nights - meaning winter blankets already to protect them from, in their condition, potentially fatal weather.

The initial veterinary exam showed, thankfully, no

organ damage due to the starvation. They all had tape- worms and some other parasite issues, but luckily there should be no lasting effects of their starvation. All three horses will go through WHHR’s program of blood work, fecal and nutrition program with the hopes of a full recovery. It will take about 8 months to a year
