ROTARY IN IRELAND – INTERNATIO I
T’S AMAZING TO THINK AFRICAN PEOPLE STILL NEEDS OUR HELP. HOME TO 1.1 BILLION PEOPLE AFRICA
IS THE WORLD’S POOREST AND MOST UNDERDEVELOPED CONTINENT WITH A CONTINENTAL GDP THAT ACCOUNTS FOR JUST 2.4% OF GLOBAL GDP.
Also home to the largest reserves of precious metals with over 40% of the gold reserves, over 60% of the cobalt, and 90% of the platinum reserves, Africa have circa 30% of the earth’s remaining mineral resources.
Yet, almost 40% of adults in Africa are illiterate – two-thirds are women, with fewer people with internet connections than there are in just New York City!
Rotary has a huge role to play in easing the suffering of ordinary men, women and children, while the governments of the world sort out the ‘glass half empty – glass half full’ story above. Rotary in Ireland has been busy as always…..
Project Ciara: the borehole geo survey is complete and the quotations for the pipework are in. Now the paperwork is being completed for a Global Grant for 20Km of pipeline and 15 water kiosks. This project will bring water to over 10,500 people. Clubs are still donating 500 pounds / 600 euro to this project.
Jole Rider: we are well on our way to reaching our next target of 1,000 bikes. John Trimble and A1 transport came to our rescue again and shipped the bikes from the open air prison Loughan House to the UK (for shipping on to Africa). The Rotary club of Bray collected a fantastic 500 bikes from their local community.
Shelterbox: Clubs went into their local communities all over the country and raised a magnificent amount of circa 100,000USD for this charities work in the Philippines.
