HAT IS INNER WHEEL? MOST LONG SERVING ROTARIANS ARE FAMILIAR WITH ITS SISTER


ORGANISATION, INNER WHEEL, BUT FOR THOSE MEMBERS WHO JOINED MORE RECENTLY, I AM DELIGHTED TO HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO GIVE YOU SOME INFORMATION ABOUT INNER WHEEL, AN ORGANISATION I FEEL HONOURED AND PRIVILEGED TO BE LEADING IN OUR COUNTRY IN THIS OUR 90TH YEAR OF VOLUNTARY SERVICE.


We were founded in Manchester in 1926 by the wives of Rotarians to serve the needs of their local communities. Since its humble beginnings Inner Wheel has grown into one of the largest women’s voluntary organisations in the world. We have 100,000 members in 3,895 Clubs in 103 countries. The core aims of Inner Wheel are to – PROMOTE PERSONAL SERVICE, FRIENDSHIP and INTERNATIONAL UNDERSTANDING.


While traditionally membership of Inner Wheel was restricted to the female relatives of Rotarians and Inner Wheel members, it is now open to all women, who share in it’s ideals of Service and Friendship.


In recognition of the services we provide, the United Nations have honoured us by giving us three permanent seats at NGO level, one based in New York, one in Geneva and one in Vienna.


We play a very relevant role in our local communities at a time when assistance is ever more important. We do this with simple functions. In Dublin alone this year we donated €3,000 to Brother Kevin for his Food Centre, and €2,500 to St. Vincent de Paul.


Our local Alzheimer’s Centre and many other smaller organisations were also helped. I may tell you that this work is being carried out by all the
