ebruary is the perfect month to pay homage to the heart. Of course there is Valentine’s Day, which conjures up images of cupids and little heart-shaped candies, but what about your actual heart, the organ that keeps blood pumping, beat by beat, day after day, sustaining life?
I don’t often think about my own heart except when it’s pounding in my chest after a good workout. But let’s take a minute and just really think about it—your heart is amazing, and without it, we would be in big trouble. In our feature article this month, “Rethinking Heart Health,” by Linda Sechrist, we see that Dr. Dean Ornish’s seven-year study, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association,
Debra Tucker
teaches us that fitness, proper nutrition and stress management will help keep our hearts healthy. Taking care of ourselves benefits our mind, body and spirit so much—your heart and your figure will thank you for making healthy lifestyle changes. A special thank-you to our new columnist, Dr. Evan Fleishmann, of Organic Basic Foods, in Hoboken. This is his second appearance in Natural Awakenings Hudson County, and this month, he offers suggestions for supporting heart health on page 19.
Speaking of healthy lifestyle changes, how are your goals and New Year’s resolutions coming along? I hope you are all taking it easy and gradually making the changes you find worthwhile. Be kind and gentle to yourself, and remember that change doesn’t come overnight, especially if you are kicking a tough habit. Our Fit Body department this month is all about Spin. There are many local gyms in the area offering classes and stationary bikes to get you pedaling your way to health. Perhaps you might want to give this hot trend a spin. Look for us on Facebook at Natural Awakenings Hudson County and Twitter at @NaMagHudson for hot topics and local news and events. Thank you for choosing Natural Awakenings magazine, Hudson County’s only healthy living publication.
