Live 24-Seven - Interview
Tina, those S Club 7 days are well and truly gone looking at the music video for Makin’ Me Dance, you look incredible... Ahh thank you! Do you feel like you’ve finally found where you want to be musically? Oh my god definitely, I mean I haven’t left the studio since the band split, I’ve just been working with loads of different producers and writing so many songs. It’s just great to finally get there and have the chance to make a video and get something out there.
You have a debut album out early next year, tell us what we can expect as you’ve been working with some great industry names? Yes, I’ve been so lucky, I’ve been working with William Orbit. I love all of his songs and music and it’s amazing to be able to work with people that you respect. In terms of the album, there are some really different songs on there. I’ve got a follow-up single next year called Woman which is a bit more bluesy with an R&B vibe to it, so people will see my style even more, so ‘Dance’ is just a little bit of a taste of where I’m going.
S Club 7 achieved so much! Sixty million record sales worldwide, Brit Awards, an award-winning Kids TV show shown in 133 countries – huge success. With that in mind, do you feel pressured to try to replicate that with your solo career or do you think, actually I don’t have to prove myself, I’ve done that? I guess a part of me feels pressure due to how well S Club did, but I’ve seen the top end of the
88
industry with the band so there’s not that huge pressure to prove myself again, although I’d love my solo work to go as far as it can go! But you know I’m doing it because I enjoy it and love what I do and you know, fingers crossed, people will like it, but [laughing] trying to replicate S Club, well I won’t lose sleep over that!
At the time did you appreciate what you had achieved? No, no I didn’t, it was crazy and to be honest I don’t think any of us realised what we were accomplishing at that point. We were so used to it as our record went straight in at Number 1 and doing every show and travelling the world, it was really quick success, so we all took it for granted in a way, [laughing] it seemed normal to us, but it was anything but, it was crazy!
Do you keep in touch with the group? Yes I do and this past year we’ve been talking about maybe doing something next year as S Club! So we’ll see! That would be great! The Big Reunion on ITV2 was hugely successful for the groups! I know, Steps have smashed it – they’ve got a sell out arena tour. We’re thinking it would be great if we could do something, but we’d want to do something a bit special because we’ve had our TV show, so we were a little bit different from the others in that respect, so we’d want to do something different for the fans.
