Recruitment – Dos and Don’ts
Recruiting employees for your business is an investment that should pay dividends if you select the right employee. Recruiting the wrong employee can be costly in time and money spent trying to train or replace the employee and the disruption this causes. There may even be a risk of an em- ployment tribunal claim if the candidate believes that the decision not to recruit them or to dis- miss them was discriminatory.
A few steps can help minimise these risks. Do
• Think about the role that you are recruiting for and prepare a job description with the key tasks and skills needed. Speaking to other people that the candidate may work alongside can be helpful.
• Think about how you will advertise the role and the wording. The vehicle for advertising can mean that it is more accessible to some sectors of the population than others – internal recruitment may reinforce existing biases favouring some groups over others. Wording such as ‘mature’ or ‘dynamic’ though less clearly favouring one group than ‘would suit young mother’ can still be deemed discriminatory.
• Prepare the questions that you will ask the candidates and take notes of the interview. This way you will be able to refer to them later if the interviewing process is lengthy to compare different candidate’s responses and these may prove useful evidence if the process is challenged.
• Take up references and check the candidate’s qualifications and always consider making any offer conditional upon these being satisfactory and check that the worker has permission to work in the United Kingdom.
• Have a probationary period set out in your contract of employment and diarise reviews so that any issues can be identified and hopefully resolved within that period.
