Live 24-Seven - Interview
Katie, firstly congratulations, a little late, but since I last interviewed you – you got married! Yeaaaaa! Thank you so much Katie, on the 1st September we celebrated our one-year anniversary and it’s gone sooo quick!
And your dress was absolutely stunning! Oh thank you, you know I think it’s the saddest thing not to wear your wedding dress again, so my best mate is getting married next year, so after she gets married I’m thinking of holding a wedding dress party so that everyone who has got married can come in their wedding dresses and those that haven’t can come in a wedding dress anyway!
They actually have a wedding dress ball in Warwickshire whereby brides and their bridesmaids come in their dresses to relive the moment! Nooo, fantastic, that’s a great idea!
Onto business now, next week you launch the second single from your sixth studio album, tell us a bit about the album because Mike Batt was of course involved, but his son was too, wasn’t he? Yes, well this album came off the back of the previous one as were looking for extra tracks and Luke, Mike’s son, engineered the tracks in such an amazing way that it seemed a shame not to create another album. I’ve always loved Mike’s sounds, but Luke gave it a different spin, he and Mike have been writing together for a decade and when I first met Mike, Luke was only 13 or 14, so it was nice to see him grow up and contribute so majorly.
It’s being hailed by some as your finest album yet – how does that sit with you? Oh that’s very nice, I mean I’ve been producing albums for a decade and each time you try to get better or deliver more and it’s great that some people think that –so yes, that’s a great feeling!
The material on the album had quite a special preview, as the first single was commissioned by the Palace for Her Majesty’s Coronation Gala – is that right? It was, yes, it all happened quite quickly, it was about a year ago and Mike rang me up and said that the Palace had rang and asked if I would perform at the Coronation Gala and I said that I’d love to! I had the easy job and Mike had the very difficult job of composing something for me to sing, so he had the task of writing something that was appropriate for the event, but that would also appeal to people and I love how he approached it by celebrating the matriarchal figure or the mother. We didn’t know if that was going to end up being on the album, but I was so pleased with how it came out that it felt completely right that it was a part of Ketevan.
Now you just said that ‘you had the easy job’, which is so like you! You’re very understated in your success despite being one of Britain’s most successful recording artists of the Millennium selling more than 11million albums, 1million concert tickets and 56 platinum awards, you’re just very understated in taking about your achievements. It’s easy to get caught up in the drama or hyping it up. I mean there are plenty of people around me hyping it up, so I try to keep it on a level! I feel most when I’ve heard music that has just destroyed my heart and blown me away – so I’m talking about music I haven’t made like Eva Cassidy, Led Zepplin or Queen and all I’ve ever tried to do is just respond to that, so I think that’s a nice way of putting it, that when you hear something that moves you it’s nice to respond to it, so that’s my approach to the whole thing.
You’re amidst a European Tour and working right up to the middle of December aren’t you? Yes, well I’m out here on promo at the moment, but then I’m back in the UK on and off until the European Tour starts the middle of next month.
