Live 24-Seven -Wye Valley Homes
That’s just one example of Cath’s thoughtful attention to the detail. She has already included a wireless docking system in the living room so guests can play their own music and there are TVs with DVD players in each of the kids’ bunk rooms. It’s a deliberate contrast between back to basics and high tech living: “Here you have a choice – you can be as low tech or as high tech as you like – you can enjoy the great outdoors and the chance to cook on the open fire in the grounds or come inside and have all the gadgets!”
For those who intend to make the most of the outdoors, in the hallway there is a large antique pew to sit on to put on outdoor shoes and wellies – and Cath has provided dog towels and plenty of trays for dirty boots and shoes. There’s even a choice of rustic walking sticks displayed in an old milk churn. Outside, the original benches and table provide a wonderful barbeque area around a camp fire. Cath has even added a reclaimed Belfast sink outside, complete with some of the enormous, old and well-used cooking pots left over from the cabin’s use as an adventure centre. The sink is perfect for scrubbing muddy boots or dog washing!
Another feature of the cabin’s former use is the old toilet block. “It was stripped right back – the only good bit was the roof so that’s all we kept. We moved the entrance and started with a blank canvas for all the fittings.”
Cath has made the toilet block into two rooms which mirror each other, each fitted with two roomy modern shower cubicles, three toilet cubicles and attractive wash hand basins. “I used hard-wearing anti-slip commercial flooring but I wanted the cubicles to be smart and stylish with lots of privacy.”
Now that the log cabin is finally finished – and in time for Christmas − Cath is proud of what she has accomplished. “When we started work and we took off a bit of plasterboard to see what was on the walls I saw I really had bought a wood cabin – that was the great outdoors outside! It was just ply board – there was no insulation at all. There were holes in the roof, too. I didn’t realise what I had taken on. Yes, it has cost more than I anticipated but I have no regrets!”
