ne year ago, in our September/October 2012 issue, I outlined the case for the Canadian fitness club industry to establish its own Canada-wide survey. Today, with the support and input of club owners and operators
across the country, we’ve seen this initiative come to fruition. The 2013 Canadian Heath Club Report, a first for the Canadian
fitness industry, is now being finalized for its planned October release. The report, produced by IHRSA (International Health, Racquet
and Sportsclub Association) in collaboration with Fitness Business Canada and with support from canfitpro and Fitness Industry Canada, is a detailed and professional analysis of survey data collected from club operators, and also includes an industry overview, club profiles, expert commentary and more. For further
details, check out this issue’s “Canadian Forum” on page 62. In June of this year, following many days of extensive rainfall, Calgary and southern
Alberta suffered catastrophic flooding with damages estimated by the province of Alberta at over $5 billion. Many fitness facilities in the area were significantly impacted – in fact, some may never re-open. While no business owner can fully prepare for all that nature throws at us, steps can
be taken to help manage a business’s exposure. In “When Disaster Strikes” (page 18) senior editor Barb Gormley speaks with Calgary club operators about their experiences and lessons learned in the wake of the worst flooding in Alberta’s history. Also in this issue, we present our “2014 Canadian Product and Service Directory”
(page 28). All companies listed in the directory are committed to serving the Canadian health and fitness industry. Check out the supplier directory section for detailed profiles of many of the listed companies.
