CHAPTER 7 JACK AND BOBBY Ronnies scream was followed by a blood

curdling yell as he stripped away the monitor- ing devices and ran with a leap and jumped onto Johnnys bed and crawled on top of Johnny and held on for dear life, screaming “No!” The harder the staff tried to pull Ronnie away from Johnny the tighter he held on screaming. It was more than Paul and Greta could bear! Both joined Ronnie in telling the staff no, that they wanted time to think and talk with Ronnie to calm him down. The oper- ation was put on hold for a day and resched- uled. Greta and Paul sat down beside the bed and tried to reason with poor Ronnie who was still on top of his twin sobbing relentlessly. As he began to relax to the soothing sound of his grandmothers voice, her mind was racing back to their childhood. She remembered their fifth birthday when Ronnie had first started talking about Jack and Bobby. She started trying to explain that the doctor was- nʼt going to hurt Johnny, just remove the tumor and that would help him to breath bet- ter. In a very deliberate and calm voice Ron- nie said, “ I know, but it will kill Bobby. He canʼt live without Johnny”. Greta finally un- derstood what he was saying, and sat down swooning from the possibility that this could actually be real. All those years of Ronnie talking about Jack and Bobby came rushing back into her memory. All those lunches and

meals being prepared because it was what Jack or Bobby wanted. She felt her legs be- come weak and slowly sat back down in the chair beside the bed. She would have to know the absolute truth, before she would let any- thing more be done. What she had regarded all his life to be a cute game with different names, was finally beginning to be under- stood. How though, could she reason within herself what was to be done. She would have to be sure enough to live with the decisions that would have to be made. She resolved the first thing that should happen would be more x-rays and MRIs ordered to determine exactly what was living inside her grandsons. Morning came with Paul and Greta still with the boys. Night had brought a torrent of emo- tions as she tried to explain to Paul the possi- bility of Ronnieʼs obvious telepathy that had been proven over and over as they grew. Al- though it had been present it had been met with disbelief and disregard. Most times they swept the possibility that he had a special gift under the rug and called it cute and funny. When the doctor came in to talk he had a stern look on his face and asked Paul and Greta to meet him in the family conference room. Both feared the worst was about to happen. The doctor was adamant about oper- ating on Johnny and taking the mass immedi- ately. Greta, backed by Paul, suddenly became bolder than she had ever been in her life and simply put her foot down saying, “No one, including you Mr. Doctor man, will touch either one of my grandsons without knowing exactly what is inside them”. Do you hear me Mr. Doctor man?!” He shook his head as he reluctantly called the nurse in to schedule the MRIs. Johnny again, being in the more critical
