acoustic guitar.
Who all is in your band? I know you work with the amazing Chris Anderson a lot, give me your thoughts on each of the guys. My band? I got an inner circle of guys that I’ve worked with since 2004, Chris Anderson on Resonator and Acoustic guitars, Doug on Harp, Dennis on bass, and now am using
drummer Jim Klinger that subs for him from time to time. I’m truly blessed to have these very talented and wonderful friends that sup- port me in performance. I really don’t have to worry about having a good time because they keep the gigs fresh, exciting, and fun. Individually, they all are not only profession- als but at the top of their game. It pushes me to play at my very best. What can I say? An- derson or Britt can play with anyone and yet they’ll take a humble gig with me when I need them. Dennis has devel- oped into an exceptional bassist and his talent as an engineer and pro- ducer awes me. Doug is right in there with them, and geesh - Johnny Neel?! God, where do these guys get such amazing talent. I couldn’t ask for a better Russell Gulley Band.
You have a gig in New York the end of this month. How did that come about. New York. Looks like I’ll do that run in early 2014 now. Several folks are involved in making that possible. Started out with a Sonic Bids bid at the suggestion of several friends. I followed up on it and once the folks at Freddy’s Back Room got involved, I’ve had the support of folks like
Michael Grando on drums. All these guys are very busy. Dennis plays with Jeff Cook of Ala- bama and other groups. Chris is of course out a lot with The Outlaws and Black Hawk. Doug’s heath limits where he can gig, so I have very qualified subs for all if it requires it due to schedules. Britt Meacham is back play- ing guitar for me when needed and Johnny Neel subs as well from time to time on harp and keys. These days I play a lot of solo gigs as well, so my “act” can be from one to four players depends on the gig. Also now that Grando works with Joe Diffie, we have a
Dick Cooper, April Mae and the June Bugs (a New Jersey band), Justin Johnson (cigar box aficionado and rave guitarist from North Car- olina) - all contributing to break the ol’ man into the Big Apple. Even Christine Olhman, the Beehive Queen from SNL, has been sup- portive. So 2014 will see me heading North.
Tell us about other shows coming up. I’m working a lot around Alabama, Ten- nessee, and Georgia this fall, mostly clubs, a few festivals such as one of my favorites, The Eutaw Black Belt Folk Roots Festival. That’s
