InDIVIDuALS InTereSTeD In YMCA careers now have an additional resource at Springfield College, which is a desig- nated premier leadership development center for the YMCA of the USA. The Harold C. Smith YMCA Career Development Fund has been established to support career development activities of the Office of YMCA Relations at Springfield College. This fund was established with a gift made by long-time College Trustee Harold C. Smith.

Springfield College Public Safety Hosts Texting/Drunk Driver Simulator Program
THe SPrInGFIeLD CoLLeGe Public Safety Department hosted a texting/drunk driver simulator program on campus in March. The program was designed to educate individuals about the dangers of texting and driving, and driving under the influence of alcohol. More than 100 students tried the simulator which was designed inside of an actual car equipped with digital screens to allow spectators to view the results.

Janet LaBreck ’01 Appointed to Position by President Obama
SPrInGFIeLD CoLLeGe alumna Janet LaBreck G’01 was nominated by President Barack Obama and the White House and has been named the next rehabilitation services administration commissioner. Currently the commissioner for the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind (MCB), a position she has held since her appointment by Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick in 2007, LaBreck served as the MCB regional director for central Massachusetts from 2001 through 2007. She has held various positions with MCB including vocational
rehabilitation counselor from 1993 through 2001 and independent living coordinator from 1987 to 1992. In addition, she has been an adjunct professor at Assumption College since 2005 where she teaches graduate-level courses in rehabilitation for the blind and case management in rehabilitation.

McCabe Lecture Focuses on the Practical Application of Science
THe SPrInGFIeLD CoLLeGe Department of Biology and Chemistry recently hosted the 16th annual Britton C. and Lucile McCabe Lecture featuring Janet Yancey-Wrona. Yancey-Wrona’s presentation entitled, “My Life App,” focused on how science and its practical application have infused her career. Yancey-Wrona is currently the product manager for lab products at Maine Manufacturing, LLC, where she markets solutions for protein detection and analysis. Prior to joining Maine Manufacturing, LLC, Yancey- Wrona was the first director of the office of innovation and science advisor to the Governor of Maine, where she developed a state science and technology action plan to promote economic development through support of innovation throughout the state. The Britton C. and Lucile McCabe Lecture honors longtime professor of biology Britton C. McCabe and his wife Lucille McCabe.

Springfield College Physical Therapy Program Awarded 10-year Accreditation Cycle
THe SPrInGFIeLD CoLLeGe Physical Therapy (PT) Program recently was awarded a 10-year accreditation cycle by the Commission on Accreditation in Physical Therapy Education (CAPTE), the longest accreditation cycle presented by CAPTE. This recognition is a result of the PT program being in full compliance with national accreditation standards. The D.P.T. degree is a three-and-a-half year/seven semester course of study that replaced the master of science degree starting in 2005. Most students enroll in a dual-entry, dual-degree program that, over the span of six and a half years, leads to a bachelor of science degree in health science and a D.P.T.
